Because Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare form of skin cancer that is seen far less frequently than melanoma, many oncologists have never encountered it in their medical practice. However, the time is ripe for sharpening oncologists’ awareness of this disease because several reports indicate that this disease—which is far more deadly than melanoma—is growing in incidence as the population ages. More importantly, recently completed and ongoing clinical trials indicate that MCC is amenable to immunotherapy, and in March 2017 an immune checkpoint inhibitor received FDA approval for its treatment.
